Do not try to override school management. On a personal device, keep the child’s supervised personal account as the primary family-controlled environment and add the school account using the school’s and Google’s supported method.
Why this decision matters
The same child can have two Google identities with different administrators. When the school account is added as a separate Chromebook user rather than inside the supervised profile, the parent should not assume Family Link applies to that separate session.
A practical starting sequence
Identify ownership
Check whether the device is enrolled or managed by the school and who the Chromebook owner account is.
Identify account placement
On a personal Chromebook, confirm whether the school account is added within the supervised profile or as a separate sign-in user.
Test both responsibilities
Verify school apps work, family controls behave as expected, and the child understands which account to use for each task.
What the child experiences
The child should be able to distinguish their school account from their personal account and know that each can have different rules and visibility.
Parents generally cannot replace school policies on a managed device. Family Link also does not automatically govern every separate school-account sign-in context.
When to review it
Review at the start and end of the school year, after device re-enrollment, or whenever the school changes account instructions.
Set up a personal Chromebook correctly
The Chromebook Setup Guide combines Family Link, owner checks, school-account placement, browsing, apps, and review.
