The 10-year-old iPhone setup: what to choose before handoff.

At age 10, the phone should begin as a dependable family tool with deliberate access—not as a smaller version of an adult’s phone.

Recommended starting point

Use a Child Account in Family Sharing, keep app and purchase approval active, begin with known contacts and structured web access, protect the parent controls with a parent-owned passcode, and loosen one category at a time.

Why this decision matters

A 10-year-old may be ready to carry a phone without being ready to manage every store, browser, contact, privacy, and time decision. The starting setup should remove decisions the child does not yet need to make while leaving calling, transport, school, accessibility, and family communication reliable.

A practical starting sequence

1

Build the family foundation

Give the child their own Child Account and place it in Family Sharing. Keep recovery information and the Screen Time passcode with the parent.

2

Make access intentional

Require approval for eligible downloads and purchases, begin with a small contact set, and choose content and browsing settings for the child’s current use—not their future use.

3

Rehearse the phone

Test calls, messages, location expectations, app requests, time requests, emergency access, charging, and what to do when something unexpected appears.

What the child experiences

The child will sometimes see a request or limit instead of immediate access. Explain that the request is part of the setup—not evidence that they did something wrong—and agree on when requests will be answered.

Control boundaryWhat this setup does not promise

Apple controls do not review every conversation or guarantee that all content is appropriate. Features and defaults can also vary by software version, age, and region. Verify the live settings on the family’s devices.

When to review it

Use the first seven days to repair accidental blockers. At day 30, review one category at a time: apps, purchases, time, web, communication, then privacy and location.
